Consultancy for European Bison Health Monitoring

On 14 July 2026, our team participated in a technical consultancy meeting in Reșița focused on the development of an integrated health-monitoring programme for the free-ranging European bison population in the Țarcu Mountains.

The meeting brought together veterinary authorities, researchers and conservation practitioners, including representatives of DSVSA Caraș-Severin and Rewilding Romania, to define practical approaches for long-term wildlife health surveillance.

Our contribution focused on interpreting previous parasitological and haemoparasite findings and on providing expert input for the design of a structured monitoring framework. This included recommendations for sampling live animals, carcasses and faecal material, necropsy procedures, mortality investigations, sample banking and data management.

The consultancy also addressed health considerations related to future translocations and preventive measures for relevant infectious and parasitic threats, including bluetongue and thelaziosis.

The overall objective was to support the development of a practical, science-based system for health surveillance and risk management in one of Romania's key European bison reintroduction programmes.
