Canine Parasite Prevention: How Broad Is Broad Enough? | Elanco

On 19 September 2026, our Director, Prof. Andrei D. Mihalca, delivered an invited presentation for Elanco Animal Health focused on modern approaches to parasite prevention in dogs.

Entitled "Canine Parasite Prevention: How Broad Is Broad Enough?", the lecture examined how parasite-control strategies should be adapted to the changing epidemiological landscape rather than based solely on a fixed list of traditionally recognised parasites.

The presentation reviewed current and emerging parasitic risks relevant to dogs in Romania, including intestinal, extra-intestinal and vector-borne parasites, and discussed how climate, animal movement, wildlife expansion and changing ecological conditions are reshaping exposure patterns.

Particular attention was given to the concept of broad-spectrum prevention, emphasising that "broad" should mean clinically and epidemiologically relevant coverage for the individual animal, its lifestyle and its geographic risk profile.

The lecture also addressed recently emerging or increasingly recognised parasites in Romania, including Thelazia callipaeda, Spirocerca lupi, Onchocerca lupi and other vector-associated infections, and highlighted the importance of combining preventive treatment with diagnostic surveillance and risk assessment.

The event provided an opportunity to connect current parasitological evidence with practical preventive strategies for companion-animal practitioners.
